ok,my computer is messed up bad,and I can't figure out how to fix it. I ran my avg virus scan, and it found nothing wrong with my computer. I had not restarted the computer for about a month,so I thought I would restart it. well, when I went to start it up again,it came back on and most of my stuff was lost, and it said I had to sign in under a temporary profile, and every time I shut the computer off,it loses everyhting I had in the temp profile here is the message that comes up when I start my computer: Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. possible causes of this error include insufficent security rights or a corrupt local profile
DETAIL- an I/0 operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. the registry could not read in,write out or flush one of the files that contain the image of the system registry.
Windows can't find the local profile and is logging you in with a temp profile. changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
Any way to get my computer back? thanks for any and all help!!!!
Try booting in Safe Mode, then run your virus scan. If that doesn't find anything or it still doesn't resolve the problem, re-install Windows. Don't re-format, just install over top of the current copy. That might straighten it out.
I would suggest just installing windows ontop of it, like scole said. If I was you, I'd get everything important off that computer, back it up then do a full restore of it.
I would try to login as the Administrator of the PC if not try to create a new Admin account from the Temp account.
Login as the Admin
Go to c:\documents and settings\%username% and see if you can see your data. If so I would copy it to another folder on your C: drive.
Delete the profile giving you problems then re-create it.
I would then update AVG, re-run the scan, run spy-bot seach and destroy, run ad-aware, then update your OS with all the patches.
If that doesn't fix your issue then I would go ahead and reformat the PC. If you havea partitioning software you could create another partition move your data there and then proceed to format.
There is a great forum for this at TECHSUPPORTGUY.COM i used to have all kinds of trouble with my computer at my other job and we used these guys for just about all our computer virus problems. you'll need to download Highjack this and run a log and post it in the security forum of that website. and someone will be along shortly to help you and tell you what you need to delete and give you step by step instructions on how to get it back to normal. They always got mine running good again. We kept getting viruses from one of the girls that worked there sending us bad emails that someone had sent her. Anyway just go to MAJORGEEKS.COM and download highjack this and run a log and post it to the techsupportguy forum. i hope you get it all worked out.
If I re-install windows, will it erase all the programs and other stuff I have downloaded on my computer now?I have ran hijack this since this happened and went to a couple websites they had to tell what the things in my registry meant. there wasn't any thing out of the ordinary in there. I did go to c:\documents and settings\%username%,and it seems like most of the stuff I lost is in there somewhere. How do I log in as admninistrator? I have to get ready for work now,but I will check into the techsupportguy website as soon as I get another chance to work on it..thanks for all the help so far!!!
Well, if this is XP Home you will need to boot into safe mode to login as the admin. If it is W2k or XP Pro there should be an admin account which since you don't know about it means the password is blank.
Yes, if you reinstall windows it will wipe out everything and I think that is the best way to go about the isssue. You can just put in the OS disc and it will replace the system folder/files but I don't think that will get rid of your issues for you.
So, if you have a thumb drive or a CD-Burner start making a CD of all the software and data, and don't forget your favorites and all that good stuff.
I would then reinstall windows and it should ask you to format the drive, do that NTFS is better than Fat32.
