C6 or FMX

How can I tell whether I have a c6 or FMX? It is a 70 f100 with a 360 and all I know for sure is that the tranny is way shorter that the c6 that came in my thunderbird. Is there anything I can look for to tell the difference without finding numbers?

count the bolts. but i am 100% sure it is a c-6 because a fmx was not put behind a fe enigne.

the c-6 pan has an unmistakable L-bend in it(wider towards the front). I'm pretty sure the FMX came with a square pan.

also the length means nothing as the tailshaft is removable and cars had a longer one than trucks

AAAH Not So Grasshopper. Many of this series trucks with automatics had the FMX and FMX family COM trannys.

As mentioned the pan is a good way to tell, as is the body. The C6 bell & body is one piece and the FMX/COM is alu bell and cast iron mid section.

C6 has a fixed bellhousing, FMX has a removable bellhousing. Also, the main case on the FMX is cast iron, whereas, the C6 is all aluminum.

The FMX was a car tranny and NEVER used on trucks. The MX-HD Medium case cruise-o-matic is what you find if ford trucks. It is of the FMX family but not considered a FMX. People call them the FMX all the time but this is incorrect. I just had my Cruise-O-Matic rebuilt and you will not find any parts looking under FMX.
