I bought a mechanical oil temp. gauge and plan on putting on my E4OD. I crawled under the truck and took a look at the test port.
The temp sensor looks to have a 1/2in NPT fitting and a fairly long probe, the test port has a much smaller fitting. Question, ...what size is the test port fitting on the E4OD ('90) and is it normal to have to put together a bunch of adapters to make everything mate? Will the temp reading still be valid?
I believe the temp sensor should be put in the pan of the tranny for a more accurate reading. They'll usually recommend removing the pan and brazing in a threaded bung for the sensor. There are also kits that will allow the sensor to be placed in the flow of the cooling line so you're reading the temp of the fluid as soon as it comes out of the tranny.
The port is 1/8" pipe thread. It isn't normal to have to adapt the sensor, and if it is moved away from the trans you'll have adaptor temperature on the gauge, not trans temp.
If you have to use the big sender you will need to install it in the pan. There isn't a lot of room inside the pan so be careful where you install the probe or it won't fit.
Thanks for the info. I dont think I want to drop the pan and weld in a fitting. The pan has little clearance so placement is too critical for my liking. I'll look into putting the probe inline with the cooling lines where it exits the transmission.
