So, I am still having troubles with my e4od trans intermittantly slipping after towing for a while. If I drive the truck without towing, it shifts great, but if I tow anything, it will eventually have problems, when shifting into drive, it sometimes leads to a neutral condition. When the trans is cold or at lower operating temps, it drives fine. I have been told that I need a rebuild, as the fwd clutch is smoked, or the seals are leaking not fully engaging the clutch. Would synthetic fluid help? I have a hard time swallowing a 2500 dollar repair bill.
I looked around and found that my factory radiator trans cooler is bypassed and out front is a 12" x 12" hayden tube cooler. Can this cause trans overheating? I want to hook it back up as I think only having one cooler is contributing to me problem. I bought a trans temp guage at Advanced Auto thinking I can stick it in the pressure test port ( where everyone else has theirs) and to my agrivation, it wont fit. I bought a mechanical guage and the sender bulb is 3 times larger than the test port size. Is the test port 1/8 npt? I assume I will have to return the mechanical guage and purchase an electrical guage. I really want to see what the temps are getting up to before I re-introduce the rad cooler inth the system. The trans was supposedly rebuilt at 180k (bought at 217k, 227k now) but Im thinking the guy was telling me that to make me feel good and buy his truck. It drove and towed great until this spring when I first got the false neutral condition after moving 30 square bales of hay ( not heavy at all). Id really like to change to a manual trans but either way its a 3k bill.
No it won't. It won't hurt, but it won't help the problem.

That is WAY undersized to cool your trans. That's why you are having problems when towing.

Good thought, but that cooler could very well be plugged with pieces of a previous transmission.
A better solution would be to junk that cheap cooler you have and install a cooler from a 6.0L truck.
I'm not much of a auto guy, but I'll give you my .02. The synthetic f;uid won't hurt, but I don't think it will cure your problem. If the seal is leaking, unfortunatly the tranny is going to have to come out.
When I got the 96 crewcab, it had the auto tranny. I installed the electric tranny temp gauge in the line going to the cooler, via a T in the fitting on the tranny. I already had an large aftermarket cooler run in tandum with the cooler in the radiator. It runs to the radiator then to the aftermarket one in front of the rad.
