I have a 2003 E-150 Club Wagon 5.4 with a ford trac-loc 3.55 axle. Van has 18 or 19 k on it.
It has a shudder when we accelerate from a stop or very slow speed. I post here because I understand that there may be a problem with the trac-loc, and it's not van specific. Anyone have any ideas? Is it related to the higher torque 5.4? It's still under warranty, obviously, but I'd like to know how to talk to the dealer.
It's definitely not a miss. It does it straight and while turning.
It feels something like the slight binding you sometimes get in a 4x4 when turning, just on a smaller scale and at a higher rate of frequency. It's a vibration that's not violent in any way, but definitely noticeable.
I have the same problem on my '97 F150 4x4 4.6L. Its feels like its near the transmission. It kinda feels like wheel-hop, but its not. I dont know what it is...

Exactly.
I don't think it's the T/C, because it's at such a low speed. Plus, at all other speeds and conditions, the transmission does well. At the same time, if clutches can slip and chatter, then perhaps that's it.
Well, this problem is fixed. It was indeed the clutches in the axle. The dealer replaced them today. The odd thing was that the shudder would even occur with the vehicle going straight ahead. The van only has 19,500 miles, so I guess that there was a mechanical breakdown of some sort. Hope this helps others with the same problem.
it is called a clutch pack. they can cost up to 800.00 to fix.
Uh, yeah, if you have the entire diff carrier replaced
This is EXCESSIVELY WEIRD - a straight take-off and a shudder from the traction-lok clutches? I guess it's possible if you make a tight turn, straighten out (with pre-load on the spider gears in one direction) and then do a straight take off and the one side has to slip a little bit - but it's a "little bit" ...
