I have a 98 Explorer XLT. The audio display has completely faded away. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if it anyone has fixed it at home? I was quoted $400 at a shop, and I think I could do it myself.

If you do a search for blank radio display, radio display or no radio lights you will get a ton of theads on the subject. The short version is that the power supply for the display in the radio was made using cold solder joints, these joints crack and you loose your display. There are many things you can do depending on your mechanical/electrical experience. The radio is easy to get out and take apart. You could replace the board by buying a rebuilt board from any number of places you can find on the web. You can resolder the board yourself if you are skilled with a soldering iron. You can also replace the whole radio with an aftermarket. I resoldered my myself many times and it would last a day, a week or an hour before going back out. I finally did a total and very carefull resolder of every joint on the board and it has been on ever since. If you are not good with an iron then get a replacement board. Do a forum search for the radio display and read some of the hundreds of posts on the topic. Good luck.

hope it helps, as I plan to use these instructions and give it a try myself.
What kind of Radio is it. Cassette or CD? I tried the fix in the previou forum I quoted you, but is was a diff model than what I had. I took it aprt and redid some of the solder joints , but It did not help ( luck for me the radio/cd was still working at least). The week later I tollk it out again and after two hour I found the problem. It was not the same problem with the power supply board , but i found a crack in a joint in the Display board. Redid the joints and BINGO, it now works fine. The display works like new. I did take a pic of the crack solder joint but my daughter has my camera. If you want more info, Let me know . I i can do it , so can you.
