I have a 99 Explorer/XLT v-6 4.0 liter. the light that illuminates the compass display has gone out. I took off the plastic cover but coudl not see a bulb. Question: Does anyone know how to replace lcd or bulb or whatvever makes the light that displays the information?
Do the map lights still work? If so, power should be getting to the display.
Does the temp display work or is the entire display not working?
If the entire display is out, do the following.
First push the mode button to see if it the display has been turned off.
If it still does not come on, let the cover down (garage opener cover) on the end opposite the windshield and remove the 2 phillips screws. Then put your fingers between the windshield and console and pull down firmly. The clips holding that end should pop loose and the console will hang down to access the wiring harness. You can check for voltage on the pins to see if you have power. If you do, the computer board to the compass and temp display has gone bad. Ford dealer wants a lot for the part. Check ebay, type in "explorer console" and you can get the entire assembly. I have had to buy 3 for each explorer in my family a 1995, a 1999 and a 2000. If you can't find one the same color, you can remove the computerized display from the fresh one and put it in yours. From 1995 to 2001 uses the same console, there may be other models but am only sure about these models.
Thanks for the quick responce.l will try as you said.
I have said it before and will say it again.
