The message center on our 99 cut out, and when I removed it, I checked over the circuit board. I found a capacitor that had broken loose, and killed the power to the display. I could plug it back in disassembled, push on the capacitor, and it lit back up. Ended up replacing it with a piece of wire as I couldnt find a suitable replacement. It has worked perfectly since. So if you have any soldering experience you might take a look at it yourself, or maybe show it someone that does. Ended up being a free fix for me that way.
just yesterday....the display came back on. I am really "electronics stupid" and don't have a clue as to fixing electronic oriented equip. Considering it came back on, it tells me it should be a relatively quick fix. Do I have to take it to a deal to get it fixed or would there be another alternative?

Could you give me some more specific instructions? I think that I follow you for the most part. How do I remove the message center...what exactly am I looking for (keep in mind I am not circuit board savvy). Thanks!
I believe you remove it by pulling down on the windshield side, and then it slides forward. Ours has the sunroof, and so it caught on the front edge of it. Once it was hanging from the wires, I just removed the wiring connectors and took it inside. I had to disassemble it a bit to get to the circuit board, but once I got that far, I just looked at every connector. I found a capacitor that is a really thin rectangle lying flat on the circuit board that was slightly tipped up on one end. Its soldered at both ends, and one side had failed. Took it back out to the truck, hooked it up in the disassembled state, and I could toggle the screen on and off by pushing on the capacitor and reconnecting it. I found that on either side of the capacitor there were solder holes that I could just stick a piece of wire into for a bypass.
If you arent comfortable doing some diasassembly of it, and are completely bewildered by this, I would just try to find a junkyard unit. But if you are willing to take some time and figure out how it comes apart you may come out ahead.
