Pouring gas down the carb has nothing to do with cranking the engine.
The things that allow for cranking an engine are:
The battery ,wiring,Ignition switch,wiring to starter solenoid,Starter solenoid,Starter Drive,Starter.
You need to be more specific with your situation if you want specific answers.

Look down the carb throat and pull on the accel linkage. Watch for gas squirting out of two little jets. That is your accelerator pump causing that. If you see no gas, might be time for a rebuild, or remove carb and clean, check for any blockage in those two jets.

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
Is the choke plate closing when cold?. Could also be a fuel pump going bad. If after cranking you don't see fuel coming out of the accelerator pump nozzles when you open the throttles I would suspect the fuel pump. It's an easy way to tell if there is fuel in the fuel bowl of the carb. If you have fuel coming out of the accelerator pump before you crank then I suspect that the choke isn't closing enough. The only other thing I can think of is very low compression (worn out rings) in the engine. Do a compression test on the engine.
