500 hp fe?
Has anyone built a 500 (or more) horsepower fe motor? I want to know what I have to do to get those numbers in mine (if not higher). It's a 360 bored 30 over right now waiting for me to get the money to finish it. A 430 stroker kit is definately going to be my rotating assembly. Would ported and polished eldebrock heads with roller rockers be the way to go? I was thinking a tripower setup for the top of it, what should i go with, tripower, dual quad, or a big 4 bbl? Is a 500(+) hp motor going to eat my drivetrain, or just my clutch? Anyone have numbers or estimates as to what I might get in the 1/4 mile? Will I be able to drive my truck around town, ie will i be able to have low end power so i can idle lower than 3 grand (assuming i can afford the gas)?
ps i copied this from my post in the 1967-1972 f100 forum

Here's a quote from Keith Craft:
"We can do a 390 block FE with Scat 4.250 cast steel crankshaft, Scat 4340 I-beam rods, JE pistons, Comp hydraulic roller camshaft, Crane lifters, Canton oil pan, stock front cover, Performance Products damper, Smith Brothers pushrods, Edelbrock Stage 2 small valve heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Erson roller rockers with hardened shafts, Ford Racing valve covers, MSD distributor and wires, Holley 750HP vacume secondary carburetor, Edelbrock water pump, balanced and assembled with dyno break-in and testing.
As you can see this is no stripped down engine but one with a lot of quality parts. This combination will make 550ft/lbs torque and 525HP with no problem and run all day."

Yep Scoots right if you pay attention to your parts ....500hp would not be a problem..But 1 Awww ***** in the parts department can RUIN your whole day...Putting a motor together like that is for someone that has the time and the tools and the machinery to do so..there not a motor thats built in your back yard...

I had ~$7500 in my 428 the first time around. It move 4100 lbs to mid 11's at 118 mph! Ebok heads, eagle rods, Wiseco pistons, etc. Granted this was 7 yrs ago, so I would be near 10K for a motor is not out of the question. I did have the block so that is another 1K anyhow(and near 2K now for 428 block). It all adds up really, really quick!!!!

I think mine is making about 475hp based on the latest software estimates. It could easily go into the 500s with just a cam change.
As stated, I've already got $10,000 or more invested in the motor. but, I was trying to build something unique and that made a lot of HP yet still managed a torque curve adequate for a 3/4 ton street/work truck.

A cam change can make quite a difference. I took out my performer cam (NOT RPM) and put in an Erson high flow AH and, boy, what a difference in the mids and highs (on the freeway). I have to say, though, for ease of starting everyday and low end torque the performer was a better everyday cam.

Oh yes very well.Matt....lol.. But its the Nostalgia thing... Beating an SRT-10 with 35 year old original block is a kick in the A$$...LOL...
After I start back on the 521" build....It will be a butt kicker for sure!! But that a couple years down the road....I promised the wife I would buy a boat first!!

Their was a guy on the Fe Forum Name Bob Bardell (truck called Mayhem) that had a 1966 ford truck that he built a .060 390 it was 12.7 to 1 that was estimated at 575 hp on the desktop dyno. It ran in the high 11's. I am currentl building a 390 bored .040 with a 428 crank 12.5 to 1 . the desktop dyno puts it up close to 600hp probably built my build for about $3000 and alot of patients. Just to let anyone that has heard or knew Bob w/ his truck Mayhem he just passed away this pass weekend on Sept 3. I met him once and he helped me with my build alot.
