Tri-power Spec's

Does anyone have technical experience to spec out a tri-power for a 292. For example, I've noted that many of the older intake manifolds have a number cast on them. What does that indicate? To be honest, I've either made a classic mistake or I'm really lucky. I picked up a Weiand tri-power intake with 3 Stromberg 97's. The manifold has the designation of FM 436 on it. I assume that the larger the number, the larger the ports. I'd expect if the ports are too large for the engine, I could plate them, but what if they are too small? Does such a scenario exist? I'm afraid I'm about to learn a life lesson the hard way.

I don't know how to do a link with my IPad. But if you go to eatonbalancing.com and click on the articles, bring up the 3x2 testing. Ted tested a lot of 3x2 intakes on his y block mule engine on his dyno. He posted torque and horsepower ratings. I've had an offenhouser, Edelbrock 354 and I have an Edelbrock 573 to put on next. pintoplumber,

Thanks for the link. It worked great. I think I now understand based on the article for the 3x2 tests. Based on the outcome of those tests, my Weiand falls somewhere in the middle of those available. Big surprise about the Offy's coming up short on HP. The Weiand will work fine for my 292 re-build because I'm setting it up as a driver.

Thanks,

There's a guy in Jersey or Delaware on Craigslist trying to sell an Offy with 3 carbs. He's asking $1200.00 for over a year now. Somebody should tell him it's a dog on performance. Dennis

Looks like the buyers know the market and won't pay the price. The only one who doesn't get it is the seller. I watched a few on-line marketplaces for a while. The one I purchased was a little less than half of his asking price. We were vacationing on Cape Cod when I saw it. I called the seller, told him I had cash and asked if he was willing to deal. After driving for about an hour, taking a tour of his speed shop and car collection, the manifold and carbs were mine.
