My tansfer case makes some really bad sounds when shifting into low range and also there is this constent feel of the case engaging when I am heavy on the gas. Now I have been told by several people that the clutch pack in the case can go bad. Now has anyone had one that went bad and the case was always trying to send power to the front end. I know how the four wheel drive system works and all that. I know that it is always engaged but you dont always have power there. can anyone help and also I have this case rebuilt once already .
It sounds like you are going through what I am experiencing:
I notice that my front wheel drive is engaging as I go over bumps and such, even on pavement. I hear the gears of the front differential. Is this the problem you are having? I also used to hear a thumping in the front wheels as I accelerated, but that is gone now.
I am not sure what the problem is either. I was thinking that maybe a speed controller is not sensing properly and the drive computer thinks a wheel is spinning. Does this sound logical?
I am having somewhat of the same problem. I am not getting the gear noise. But the thumping up front when your on the gas I am getting that. I had my speed sensors checked and they were all ok. The dealer told me that there was nothing wrong. So I trusted my gut feeling and started asking questions. I found that the transfercase clutch pack wears and sometimes gets stuck. This past weekend I took a 600 Mile trip and the case started like always making that thumping sound and then it just went away. My fuel milage went up instantly. Now that I am home and off of the long trip the thumping is back and gas milage is down. Got any ideas yet.
I had a similar problem, I tore down the TC and found one of the ball bearings which lock the clutch pack into full power had dropped out of the pack, took it apart, replaced the clutchplates (look like auto trans clutch plates) reassembled and filled with ATF, has worked fine for 2 yrs now. 4hrs from start to finish
So the total time is about four hours. Now how hard is this. My transfer case has been rebuilt before I do not know what they did as it was under warranty. I really think that I would be further ahead to find a low mile case . Can you give me your opinion on this please.
Hi Nick, just a thought, have you changed the fluid in the TC lately, just drain it out and refill with ATF.
Breaking apart the TC was a no brainer, just need a flat surface to work on (bench), and I would get a blowup of the parts, dealer may print them out for you!!
I would go this way rather than put in someone elses problem, My 2 cents, Philip
Good idea so you say its not that hard I have a qestion when removing the case what did you use to support it while you where taking the case out. I have never done this kind of work before. I have been a machanic for years I work on appliances and tractors so I am good with my hands can you kind of tell me what to expect.
1. Raise the exp onto jack stands and secure
2. remove driveshafts and back support
3. disconnect hi/lo shift moter harness
4. unbolt the TC from the Transmission tail stock
5 pull back TC, from transmission output shaft
6. move TC to bench (about 40lbs)
7. unbolt shell and split the TC, catch fluid and dispose
inspect all parts, replace bad and reverse proceedure.
Thanks sounds really easy I think I can handle this one I will give it a try mabye this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. Can I buy the parts at any auto parts store.
