intermittent reverse

intermittent reverse
I have a 93 F-150, 4x4. I always have all forward gears but every now and then I have NO reverse. I believe that the problem has been narrowed down to the transfer case. I know that the tail shaft from the auto is turning when there is no reverse because I can hear the parking pall engaging when I try to go back to park. I removed the transfer case and turned the input by hand and was able to stop the output shaft. I am not sure how the transfer case works so I am looking for help.
