I have a 1979 F 150 custom that my father purchased new in 79. The frame between the 2 rear leaf spring mounts has a big hole. I can't find anything to really weld to. The only thing left is the top and bottom where it goes parelel with the non existence box. the box is there, but you know northern michigan boxes. Rust is treible. The other thing wrong with it is the tie rods and drag link.
I love to drive this truck, but was offered an 1986 ford f-150 4 speed overdrive in really good shape for 800. What would you do. The 86 have either 56 thousand or 156 thousand. The body and doors are solid, along with the interior.
As a Canadian FTE I've seen my share of rusty vehicles - if the frame is badly rusted, I'll bet the cab is also. It is always difficult to not be sentimental with family vehicles....If you have a place to store the 79 F150 so you can 'part it out' you're probably better off buying and running the newer truck. Who knows how many of the 79's parts you can keep to use in the newer truck and still make good money on selling off the rest. Good luck whatever you decide.
Sad thing is it sounds like going with the 86 sounds like the better way to go.
If the frames rusted then the body prolly is starting to rust out too, if it isn't already.
The newer truck would be easyer to maintain, because you wouldn't have to worry about fixing rust problems just to keep your feet off the road or somthing like that, just drivetrain.
I would buy the 86 and then do a frame up restoration to the 79. I hate seeing these old trucks get parted out. If I had all the time and money in the world I would restore every single truck out there.
