I had a question about the starting procedure on my 2004 F-350 PSD CC. Anyways, this is my first Diesel, however my diesel experience comes from my dads truck. He still has his Ford 1985 F-250 6.9 Diesel International Harvester motor.
His glow plugs have to warm up and a light on the dash will come on and go off. Then you start the truck. I was wondering about these new trucks, what is the correct procedure? I read the owners manual and it mentions an electronic glow plug system. Does this mean I just crank the ignition, or do I have to wait for the plugs to warm up like my dads truck? I don't see any light on the dash that indicates glow plugs.
Since I have had the truck for the last week, out of habit, I turn the key and let the truck set for about 5-10 seconds and then hit the start with the key. the truck usually cranks for about 3-5 seconds and then turns over. Is this normal or what? Thanks guys.
Yes, you must wait... the indicator is the "two loops" that light up and mentioned above.
In the summer, it warm up very fast (1 - 2 seconds or less). In the dead of winter, it may take 3 - 5 seconds.
Turning the key until the light goes out will enure a "start" when cranking. If you try to soon, the motor will turn over, but there is not enough energy to pre-heat the glow-plug and fire the injector.
The circut will stay on after turning the key, so "cycling" two times in the dead of winter does not help. Just turn it once and wait the full time and you will be fine!!
Use diesel fuel additives year round and anti-gel in the winter (all the time) and you will be trouble free!!!
