I have a 02 4x4 7.3. What are some of the symptoms of wheel bearing going out? I've noticed some grease coming from the lug nuts of the front wheels that spreads to the outside of the wheels, should this be a concern?
When mine went out my ABS light came on because the metal particals took out my wheel sensor. I also noticed some clunking noise when I turned hard to the left, kinda like when your hub is locked in. This went on for about a 1000 miles maybe, but I drive 100+ miles a day. Then I really knew something was up when it felt like my truck dropped a couple of inched and I heard a awefully metal on metal noise as my rotor ground against my brake caliper mount. If you suspect you bearings I would check them as soon as you can before it leaves you somewhere.
I noticed mine while checking the brakes. Had grease all over the hub of the rotor. Stealership is $480 a hub. Luckily both times the extended warranty has paid it. Seems to me when I posted about the price some one said they could get them for like $250 each at some chain auto parts store that isn't on the west coast I'll try and find it and get back to you. Good luck they aren't hard to change just costly.

When my LF failed I was driving from Dallas to Denver. I had just purchased the truck so had no baseline for normal noise. The first inkling of trouble was a rather sharp thump from the LF. I thought I had run over something so I pulled over and visually checked the tire and wheel etc, and saw nothing out of the ordinary. It happened once again about 50 miles after that and I stopped again. Still nothing. About 50 miles after that it seized and disintigrated leaving me stranded 5 miles east of Raton NM at 10PM on a Saturday night. The subsequent tows and repairs ended up totaling almost $2,400.00. A bit unfair as there were some "while you're there items" and the tows to Denver cost $575.00, but the bottom line is if there is any question, have it taken care of sooner rather than wait for the catastrophic failure. By the way, the truck had 88,xxx miles on it at the time of failure.
I've not had one fail. I have read that the 4X4 front bearings have plastic cages for the ***** so when they get hot they are gone. I do not know about the 2X4.
