well ive been burning oil for awhile now and finally leaked the motor down. it doesnt look like rings thank heavens. but i do have oil leakage around ALL the spark plug threads which leads me to believe i may have to put valve guides in it. sounds like fun to me, what do you guys think? sheesh
My 65 F-100 was doing something like that, pulled the valve covers and all the seals were gone, not realy gone, fond them in the oil pan. My son and I replaced the seals using the rope in the clyinder trick.
Yep, I'm going through the same pain and agony on my 390. I pulled the heads, oiley goo on top of all the valves, chambers full of goo. Went through a quart every 250 miles. So I took the heads up to the machine shop, and had ALL new guides put in, and I'm going to be using ALL new valves. Really, this is the only way to fly on any engine build IMO.
Knurling Guides is just a joke!! If you ever cut a guide in half thats been knurld it would shock you how little contact and seal the valve actually has!! JMHO!!
thanks for the input guys, i was going to pull the valve covers last night but didnt get to it. i do know the guides were knurled. im going to check the seals as well. the seals on my fairlane were all pulled loose and caused a lot of smoke. thanks again.
Knurling CAN be done right, but most shops dont. The right way to do it, is to go ahead and knurl 'em, then press a pin through 'em to squish it back out to the proper dimension. The improper way to do it, is to knurl it and drill it out to the proper dimension. This doesn't leave nearly enough material.
well i pulled valve covers and found that the valve springs have pulled the umbrella seals off. may have to go to a pc seal or something. thanks for the input guys.
Either one of those kinda necessitates the smaller push-on seals... but then, you need to go to bronze guides too, because then the valve stems get NO oil...
My seals did exactly the same thing. I tried finding some high heat seals and had very little luck with the stock valve guide size of .648. I called summit and the guy found me some teflon seals that will work with the stock guides. The part number is CCA 512-16 he told me that they would have to order them and that he did not know what the price was because it is not something they stock. Hopefully these seals will last longer than my other ones did. I have the dual spring setup with the bronze guides.
