Am I being snowed??

I called a local garage with a good rep and asked them if they could do a leakdown test on my truck to help me determine if it was the valve guides or the rings that are the cause of my oil consumption.
The response I got was "All a leakdown test will tell you is if the bearings are any good. There isn't anyway to tell if it is the rings or the guides. Just do the heads and if it doesn't change then it is the rings".

Seems like a bunch of BS from everything I have read here.

So much for that place having a reputation the person you talked to hasn't a clue.. but then service managers seldom do.

Yeah, I was going to say maybe to call them back tomorrow and hopefully you will talk to someone with just a tad more sense. Whoever you talked to has a good idea if money grew on trees.

Smile try again

Paul, either try the same shop but ask to speak to someone else, or go to another shop. Obviously the person you spoke to doesn't know what type of test you are talking about. DinosaurFan

The shop must have been thinking about an oil leakdown test, which does of course check for excessive bearing clearance.

A cylinder (compressed air) leakdown test will test the valve seats and rings.

393 Stroker has a good point.
