I have an IDI 7.3 that consumes about a quart of oil per 100 miles. I wanted to replace the valve seals before I would condemn the motor. I purchased a set from NAPA. The intake seals are rubber, but exhaust are plastic and look like umbrellas. At this point I have done 2 sets and in both the plastic exhaust seals were completely broken up and in pieces. The new plastic exhaust seal goes over the valve stem and rests on top of the valve guide, but it does not go over the valve guide, like an intake seal, it just rests on top of it. Is this correct? should it just sit on top of the valve guide? I do not want these to get broken up by the valvetrain soon as I start running the motor. Has anyone installed these before, and can you shed some light on the installation of these plastic exhaust seals? thanks.
You're guilty of a little wishfull thinking there Daryl. New valve stem seals aren't going to make much, if any difference in you oil consumption. Rings are the only thing that can burn that much oil.
About the seals, are they breaking as you install them or after you start it up (or are they coming broken in the package)?
the new seals are OK. The old plastic seals in the motor are all broken. One exhaust spring assembly had pieces of the plastic seal in the spring assembly. In the other exhaust spring assembly there was nothing left of the plastic seal, and I do not see anything in the other springs also. I think all the plastic seals are gone.
Yes they sit on the valve guide. I replaced mine about 3 months ago when I did the head gaskets on my 85 6.9L. Like spectramac said its more then likly your rings. Keep puting oil inher and start saving for a rebuild.
