I'm a new member and find this a great site! My 76 F150 has a problem that has me stumpped. When the key is turned to "start" the engine turns over very strong and will continue to do so but will not fire till I relaese the key then it will start. I checked for fire at the plugs and have none while cranking but the second you release the key it will fire and start. I have a new Ign. box,cap and rotor. Could it be in the ign. switch? Again great site thanks, Cliff.

Starting problem

Ck your wireing under the hood for rubbed through or broken wires.


1979 F350,4x4,NP435,5:13 gears,Detroit locker in rear with hardened shafts,ABR in the front,L&L Ladder Bars,360 with 428 crank & rods,390 HP heads,Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch,MSD Ignition,39.5x18 Boggers,bucket seats out of a Lightning,& a Southern Body that is perfect.




1997 F350 PowerStroke 4X4,36 Inch Super Swampers, Strait Piped, Chiped, Propane Injected, LUK Clutch

Starting problem

Sounds like an ignition switch to me.

With the key in the RUN position go to the battery + post and use a wire to contact the S terminal of the solenoid to see if the starter turns over and the engine starts up.

Starting problem

(Horshack's arm shoots up) Ooo! OOOOoooooo! Ooo! Ooo! OOOOooooOOoOoOo! I KNOW this one. Gold plated guarantee. The ignition box. Mounted to the driver's side inner fender. Has 2 circuits in it. The start circuit has died. The run circuit is still good. Had this exact same thing happen on my dad's 76. Napa has the box for around $30. 3 screws and 2 plugs. 15 minute job and your golden again.

Write it down, take it to the bank and tell 'em I told you so!!
