Keep it stock and buy another one with no engine, then find a good new engine to build. I kept my 48 F-3 with an I-6 original. Bought a karmann Ghia to play with. Some day a baja bug and hot rod with my boys.

Good luck.

Keep the engine stock and look for a better shifting transmission.

John,

RESTORE IT!!

That is my opinion after seeing the picture of the truck. I hate to see a nice stock truck get butchered up, there aren't many nice truck like that left. There are plenty of other trucks out there that are in rougher shape, less complete shape that are good canidates for modification. I agree with Earl's suggestion, if you want something to chop it up and modify, sale it and use the procedes to buy another one and leave someone restore the nice truck you have.

That being said, it's your truck, it's your's to do with what you want to. Good luck with whatever you do.

I'll trade you my F1 straight up. I will promise to restore the one you have, love it and cherish it always and you would feel no guilt rodding the one I currently have.

There you go. Problem solved.

John,
I'm a darksider of the restorod variety, so that's my disclaimer. I fully believe that if you are going to build a hotrod, you should start with the best complete body and chassis you can find, not with a pile of rust and missing parts just because you might remove some of the original parts. That's a great starting point for however you want to finish it, I wouldn't have any qualms about modifying it if that's what you want to do. No matter how nice a barnfind might be, our trucks are not particularly rare so there are many more out there as nice or nicer. If you desire to use it as you say, and don't plan on making any distant trips then do a cosmetic restoration, repair/replace any safety issue parts needed, have the body media blasted and any major dings removed by someone who isn't going to do more damage than repair then take it to a discount paint shop and have a nice simple paintjob put on it. That will get it back on the road and looking good in a short amount of time with minimal expense and you can be driving it while you decide what you ultimately want to do with it without having to go back and redo a lot of expensive work. You may find you are perfectly happy to keep it like that or may find that you'd like to change a few things or even strip it right down to the bare chassis and do a complete full blown restoration.
