Just installed a re-built 351M/400 engine. When you turn the key the engine will spin about 2 inches, however it turns easily with a pipe wrench. I have replaced the starter as well. Any other suggestions?
If the battery and cables are good, It is probably a bad starter. When you get it started, keep the rpm's above 1500 for 20 or 30 minutes to break in the cam and lifters. Drive it, it may tend to run hot for a few miles and then the temp will drop. Have seen this happen several times.
>take the plugs out, and see if the starter will roll it
>over... if not , then there's something serious wrong..
Battery and cables are good. Removed plugs and it rolls over smoothly. Put plugs back in and it slows it down by 2/3. What about a hi torque starter? Think that would help. Seems to have very high compression.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Sep-02 AT 10:07 PM (EST)]somtimes with new enginges its hard for them to turn over the first time cause nothing is broken in and everything is really tight. try putting a booster on the battery also. Did you prime the engine also?

Have put booster on the battery. Not sure what you mean by prime the engine. Could you explain please. Thanks

well somtimes you take the drive gear off of an old distributor and use the hex end of it on a drill to put on the oil pump rod to run the oil pump to give the engine oil pressure before you start it.
check the timing, make sure the distributor is not too far advanced, I know this makes them turn over slow hot, might also do it when it is cold, not sure, someone else might know better.

I will give that a try. Haven't done that yet. Thanks for the info.
