On my 2000 F150, when I hit the dimmer switch to go to high beam, the headlights go out completly. It started out to be intermittent, but now it happens all the time. The headlights themselves are good.
Is a new dimmer switch something I can replace myself? Or is this something that I need to take in to be repaired? My main concern is the airbag. Does the steering wheel need to come off?
Sounds like the problem is the multifunction switch. Try doing a search for that. I don't remember the specifics, but you will need to remove the steering column covers.

Even though this was for a wiper problem, I followed the posted directions, took apart the switch and cleaned it. She works like a champ now. It was easy to do and only took about 30 minutes to complete...
