For Rust-Proofing, is oil better than undercoating?
I'm going to be rustproofing this new (used) bed I'm putting on my truck and I was wondering if I should go to Wal-Mart and get some of that rubberized undercoating to spray it with, or will I have better results and get better coverage out of some kind of oil or grease mixture? I don't want this bed to rust out like my old one.

The oil will wash off, and unless you properly clean and etch the metal the spray on undercoating will actually promote rust and flake off. Get the POR-15 products, follow the directions, and do the job right.

On one of my old trucks I didn't have to change the oil, it changed itself and soaked the entire underside of the truck to boot!
But seriously, use the POR-15 products for your restoration. Check with Carlene, the [link:www.ford-trucks.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=bodywork&conf=misc|Bodyw ork] forum moderator here for any info on how well they work.

i've never used the por-15, but it sounds like great stuff... i'd coat the under side with it, then i'd mix oil, and foundation coating 50/50 and spray it on with a shot's undercoating gun, the oil will penatrate into the places that the por-15 doesn't reach, and help stop the rust from forming.. the foundation coating helps keep the oil from washing off...
