Hey guys, just the short version of my last post in the Truck Buyers section. Is undercoating and/or rustproofing a good idea on a brand new Super Duty that I plan on keeping for many, many years. I live in central Kentucky where we don't get deep snowfalls, but several light snows and ice storms. Road are salted very heavy. As always, your feedback is appreciated. Thanks Fred
The metal they use in new trucks stands up very well. It seems to take a looong time to rust. Most tar type undercoating isn't to prevent rust anymore....it is a sound deadener and it does work for that. If you are going to go that route make sure the bottom of the truck is spotless and dry before applying. You dont want water or mud etc trapped in under the undercoat. Everything I've ever seen or heard about the types of rustproofing that is sprayed inside the panels says it's a waste of money. It's probably one of those things that cant hurt but probably doesnt help much either.
I did not get my 1991 F150 rustproofed. We get a combination of heavy road salt in the winter, and salt air (and a little water!) in the summer. The truck rusted, but I'm not sure it would have been any better with rustproofing. The areas that rusted were the hood, tailgate, and rear fender arches. I did NOT get the replacement truck rustproofed (2001 F250), and the 2002 E250 was not rustproofed, either.
Mine has been done and I also agree with the poster that said it works for sound proofing. The jury is out regarding weather or not it really works. Every one I know that undercoats their vehicles also washes them once a week and most even garage them. Both of which help to deter rust. So if you undercoat and you wash it once a week, frame and all, and you garage it, it will last a lot longer than if you don't. Sorry for not giving you a definitive answer, don't know if there is one. Take care of it and it will of course take care of you.

Wacthing "Two Guys GArage" today they had a nifty product that "electrifies" your vehicle to prevent rust. They claim that doing it (rust prevention) electrically is better than chemically.
I have no idea what the product was called though.
I for one am against undercoating. I once had a vehicle undercoated/rustproofed and did not notice any difference for the better or worse. What I have been told though is that over time as it ages the undercoating cracks or chips letting water underneath the undercoating. Once water does get "under" the coating it never dries causing hidden rust. You only find out about it after its to late. It is because of this you will notice most restored vehicles are never undercoated, it just hides to many nasty things that could have otherwise been caught and dealt with.
I live in Northern Kentucky, and have not had my truck undercoated. They dump alot of salt up here too, but, I think as long as you keep the truck fairly clean, it shouldn't be an issue. Don't forget to spray the underside of the truck about a week after the snow melts, earlier if you want, to remove any salt sticking to it. I usually hit a carwash every 2 weeks or so anyway. Like to keep her lookin good.
