Best Transmission

In your opinion, what's the best transmission Ford made?

Both automatic and manual.

The C6 is bullet proof.

C6, or E4OD.. The early E4ODs had some problems, but after they fixed them they were great..

I abused several C6's and never had a problem. I sure cannot say that for the C4.

I too like the C-6 a/t

As for manuals; T-18 in a truck

Top Loader in a car

I don't really like the E4OD because of it's inability to coast. Torque converter gears 1 and 2, direct drive 3 and 4...you get the idea...

Other that small snaggle, it's a great tranny. Mine's lasted 140000 and still going strong.

C-6 for automatic
ZF 5-Speed (the heavy duty one behind a 460) for manual.

The only hills that I can coast on around here are on roads where I'm either in 4th or OD...or 1st.

The original AOD (no computers on it ) and for stickshifts, I can't decide between the T-5 tranny or the ol' 4-speed like I learned on in the '66 Mustang we used to have...

c4 is pretty good, my daily driver has one and it shifts nice and firm, but I have to say the c6. Strong, good engine braking, and lasts forever. As for a manual, though, I'd have to say the NP-435. Very strong, last for a while as long as you keep some sort of oil in them, and a good range of gears to select from.

I had two C4's go bad due to clutch problems. I would consider this a very weak (almost junk) transmission. Definately not the best.

Maybe the question should be refined to "used" vs. "made". Probably the C-6 was the best all around transmission "used", it is not that heavy, but, could stand up to 1 ton use.

I did not know much at all about the NP435, but, after using and researching them, I would count that as the next best after the C-6.
