Clothes Dryer Assistance, Please

I have an older Norge (Maytag?) Model LDE712 elec. dryer that's screeching back down in the blower section like an alley cat. I'm trying to get the drum out to get down in there.

Have the top and front of the machine off. Front of drum lifts up, but back seems to be hung up. Don't want to yank on it too much til I find out if something needs to be removed, or is it just the seal(s) sticking. Anyone know this machine, or do I just get a bigger hammer?

Thanks y'alls

If it screechs, it's more than likely a pulley for the belt. That's also what is probably holding the drum on in the back of the dryer (the belt).

You'll need to sight down the side of the drum, and locate an indentation in the drum. Should be a belt in that groove. Not sure how to release the tension on that model. Maybe you can loosen a pulley if you can reach it.

Had an old dryer like that in college. Cost me 6 bucks for a new pulley, and no more noise.

Good luck to ya.

Guess I should have said the belt is off. It runs around the center of the drum. I ran the machine with the belt off, and the noise is down in the blower assy somewhere, which is in the back bottom of the dryer.

Just don't want to bust something on the drum by yanking too hard.

That drum should ride on two rollers on the bottom of it around 5 and 7 oclock or so.The lip on the drum may be catching on those rollers.Try to lift straight up and out.

Check the back of the dryer for a pilot bearing cover.Sometimes dryers have a bearing in the middle back of the drum for support.

You could have a broken blower wheel, something caught in the blower housing or bad motor brgs.

My Norge/Maytag(they are all made by a few companies) requires a good pull forward and tilted a little up to get the rear lip past the rollers in back. Try to get a good look with a strong light before yanking too hard, but assuming their design is pretty standard, you should be able to pull forward and a little up to get it out. Oh and the drum slides over the fabric seal ring(kind of looks like a ruffled felt collar) that you can see around the back of the drum from the inside.

The drum just sits on some glide pads and on the two rollers in the lip in back. While you got it out you might look at the pads to see if they need replacing. Don't be surprised to find out one side is way more expensive than the other, even though they look very similar. There are several parts webpages out there if you do a google search. Some of them have good blowup pictures. It's been awhile since I looked so can't help you directly. A lot of the parts for a Maytag are identical to the Norge.

What seems to make the screeching and or rumble on the Norge is the blower assembly. At least on mine. The plastic blower hub gets a little crack and then the blower is loose on the shaft. You can fix it temporarilly(two years so far) with a tiny worm hose clamp around the hub, you don't even have to remove the tub or anything esle to get at it if you has a tiny angle drive wratchet to turn the screw on the clamp. I think the blower fan itself is something like $50 but I forget. It isn't hard to get at since it is right at the front of the machine.

The other part that screeches is the long belt around the drum. Those fabric softener sheets have some waxy stuff in them that coats the drum and belt and make it slip. I cleaned mine off with alcohol. Seemed to improve things.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Couldn't find anything on Norge, but you might try here for some answers.

I found it.... There is a little rubber plug in the center of the back of the drum the covers a 3/16" bolt that holds it to a shaft. Don't know how I missed that plug, dang color is the same as the drum. There are no rear rollers as shown on all the parts sheets I've looked at.

Thanks for your help folks.
