I don't know what is with that stuff but it is no good. My belts were making a litle noise in my truck so I said what the heck and I tried some prestone belt dressing. Now the squeaking is really loud and I can feel belt slipping. I don't understand why this would happen.

Has that happend to anyone else?

I have a pretty good feeling I am going to have to replace the belt.

I have a feeling I would get in trouble if I say what I really want to say.

I believe it's basically a deglazing compound that is supposed to cut the slick surface on belts and improve friction so they grab better. Bottom line, if you need it, the belt should just be replaced :-) Belt dressing is a bandage cure.

I have used these dressings and they are strictly short term fix, like a day or two. Eventually they belt gets so gummed up with this stuff that ist squeels worse than ever. Plus you have a gummy mess on all the pulleys. My most recent experiences have been with those flat serpentine belts. I will not use dressing again on serpentine belts.

Years ago I tried it with the older style v belts and I think it worked fine with those.

The best bet when a belt squeels is to either replace it or you might clean up all the pulleys reall clean with some non greasy solvent. You could also wipe down the belt but be sure the solvent used is compatible with the rubber in the belt. I wouldn't soak the belt in solvent by the way. I also will "clean" up the surface of the pulleys the belt runs on with some medium sand paper or a wire wheel.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Post belt dressing

Here's a trick I learned from a wholesale car dealer buddy of mine.
NAPA auto parts sells a silicone grease called Silglyde (sp?). I put a SMALL dab (about the size of OO buckshot) on each side of the belt. Makes it as quiet as a mouse and the belt dosen't slip a bit. Been doing it for years with no problems whatsoever

Cliff

P.S. Make sure the engine isn't running when you do this, or we'll have to call you stubby
