being the curious guy i am i thought i would just run over to auto zone and run their scanner to see if it came up with anything, but it wouldnt connect. now i thought i read that if you have the original flash that it wont be OBD compliant, true? if so, i guess that would explain it since my 03 has never been back to the dealer.
mmmmmmm---I thought the Ford Diesel's were CAN? instead of OBDII. Anyways they OBDII that is prevalently common won't read these trucks. I think there's been some discussion/explanation of this here before Wera. PSD can explain it MUCH better than I can if he pops in today.
03's were not OBDII compatable ( not readable with third party scanners) and had to be reprogramed so they would be. The updates, along with making them compatable also screwed up the engine (no pilot injection) and if you get it done now it will screw up the tow haul.
If you have no problem with the truck, DO NOT take it near a dealership. Live with the codes not being able to be read codes with a third party scanner.
The way I understand it, all programs are cumulative, When you go in today for a fix, you get the program that is currant. It may have been updated with 8 or so revisions. The one you’re interested in may be only the third revision, but you get ALL of them. These fixes are for all sorts of problems, weather you have them or not. You get all changes.
I’ve been fighting with Ford since Oct. 03 when they took the tow haul away. That revision was too help fuel mileage but got other things fixed that were not wrong.
You can’t win.

Huh, since when did they take Tow Haul away? I'd bet there's another issue. I don't have Tow/Haul with the ZF6spd, but there's plenty of folks out there that couldn't live without it -and thankfully still have it.
They really didn"t take it away. They just changed so it does not work as well as new. They now release the torque converter clutch on release of accelerator. Early 03's stayed locked till just before stop. Great on mountian roads in Calif. with a 12,000 pound trailer.
