The column shift on my truck would not let me put it into gear. When I pulled on the column shift lever, it just fell loose and did nothing. I found a way to limp home, though. Under the hood, I was able to manually shift the linkage. Then, I had to use a screw driver on the starter solenoid to start it. My wife was holding the brake inside the truck. I also set the parking brake!
Follow the linkage and look for a disconection. I had a similar problem once - linkage came apart at the tranny hook-up - it is held on with one of those funny c-shaped snap clippy things (I don't recall the proper name) SO I put it back into place and got a new clippy thing - problem solved!
Keep it Rubber Side Down!
Ha ha ha, My 78 f150 just did the same thing two days ago, I was at the stop light, went to shift out of third into first and wham I hit my leg w/the shifter. What happened was the pot metalish metal broke inside my column. I was pretty pissed and so were the anxious people sitting behind me at the light, good thing that old 300 six had enough torque to start me out in third and get me home!! I went to autozone and bought a three on the tree to floor shifter conversion for like fifty bucks, I haven't put it in yet so i'm not sure how it will go, but just so you don't feel bad, it happened to me as well!!! I'm trying to find a donor truck so i can just convert the entire thing to 4wd, I really don't want to put that shifter in, i'd rather just swap out the entire drivetrain and suspension!!!
Yeah, mine broke back in March, stuck in third but managed to take off to get the Hurst three speed floor kit put in, I like it better than the 'three on the tree'. The original 'pot metal' collar broke in '89 or '90, then again this year and that was enough, so long column shifter!!
Common problem with Ford columns of that era. If you are not lucky enough that it is just a linkage problem the collar under the steering wheel breaks internally and sometimes the spot-welded lug on the shift tube comes off. Not too bad to fix but don't go to junk yard for the collar, too much work to put in a used part, new ones are available. Then everytime you gently shift you will remember the work to replace that part.
