Hey everyone i havnt posted in a while been buisy with things. This just poped into my mind. I was wondering if you guys prefered a manual or automatic tranny and which is your favorite.
I myself like the manual tranny and my favorite is the t-18 just cant kill it. Hey lets even get ken in on this one ! - Mike "Minus" Easter
I like a manual trans a lot but my truck has an automatic C6. My last truck had a 4 speed. All of the heavy trucks that I drive at work have manual trans so I am able to get my shifting fix out of them. I kind of like it when all I have to do is shift into "D" when I drive home at the end of the day. I also plow with my truck and the proper trans for plowing is an automatic trans. Jake.
The automatic transmissions are strong enough, and work well enough, excluding some special uses, there is no reason that a well maintained Ford truck can't change it's own gears.
Down with manual shifting.
IMHO of course :-)

In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
I like the 5spd in my '94 pick-up but I'll admit automatics are a lot nicer and easier to drive. But I think most all high-preformance cars/trucks have manuals, so I can dream about my truck being a high-preformance truck. While, compared to GM and Dodge, a Ford is a high preformance truck, but compared to a race truck, its nothing special. Besides, my sisters b/f who has ben driving manuals for far longer than me can barely drive an automatic. Its interesting watching his foot search for a clutch pedal or his hand searching for a shifter, for some people shifting is an automatic reaction to driving.
A manual is best for any situation you might have, and this includes snowplowing and trailer pulling. The ultimate setup is to have a 5 spd and brownee for gear splitting behind it. The only reason that automatics exist at all is so that our injured soldiers coming home from world war two could still drive with an arm or a leg missing. Any able bodied man with two arms and two legs that drives an auto should be very deeply ashamed of themself. My opinions may be clouded by the fact that I have a busted C6 here in one of my trucks and my manuals have never failed me. DF
Personally I have delt with my fair share of transmissions, but I like my E40d and AOd transmissions. Never had a problem with either. But I honestly think the C6 was the best, and I doubt anyone wouldn't disagree with me either.
I personally prefer the manual transmission to an automatic because it is more fun to drive and you can also take advantage of the engine's horsepower and torque better by manually shifing gears. You should also theoretically get better gas mileage with a manual transmission (assuming you don't always redline the engine or lug the transmission). My 95 F-150 has the 302 V8, and I wouldn't personally buy a 300 I-6 or a 302 V8 with an automatic behind it. However, if I needed to pull relatively large cargo or trailer loads,or plow snow on a regular basis, I would probably buy an automatic (I would also get a 351 or Power Stroke Diesel).
Hi, automatics are the ONLY way to go I used to drive stik shifts all the time left leg got about twice the size of the right why would you choose to have to hold that clutch at a light or have that shifter cluttering up the leg room in the middle of the truck? I personally have automatics in everything I drive My pickup has a diesel w C6 auto the 67 stang has a C4 and the new stang has an E4od when the 40 is done that to will have an automatic and as for racing NOBODY can shift with a stick as fast as an auto. and with pulling or plowing snow the C6 in my truck will run with any stick. John
I know several people who will tell you holding a clutch pedal is stupidity, they will tell you to simply put the shifter in neutral, or you'll end up shortening the life of your clutch. I have never had trouble with a hard to push clutch pedal, besides the weight of you leg should do most of the work, the only work is raising your foot. Dodge has two ratings for the cummins engine for an automatic and manual transmission, of course the manual is rated higher.
Make mine manual every time for all the listed reasons above - but only on the floor! Where do you guys with automatics rest your right hand while you drive?
I definitely prefer manual in the truck. In the car I like automatics. Lets see... when I drive automatic my right hand is on the wheel and my left hand is out the window.
I like em both. For plowing, the auto is the way to go. As for cruising, I dont mind pullin my own gears! Plus the extra fuel economy is a plus with a manual. For racing, I may not be able to shift as fast as an auto tranny, but gettin rubber in second and third sure shows manuals arent all that bad either!
Both have their place. But nothing, gives control like a 5 speed in 4 low. Having a stick means that you can Drive a car/truck. Having an auto simply means you can get by. You don't put auto's in Viper's or Shelby's. You do however put them in mini-vans.
Going to the grocery store, a automatic is ok. For getting through the mud/snow/whatever a stick is 2nd to none.;-)
