I think they should outlaw automatics. I see too many people hop in their car throw it in drive and proceed to put on makeup, read the newspaper, or eat while driving. It makes it a little harder to do these things with a stick and actually makes you think about driving and not everything but driving. my $.02

I like both, manuel and automatic.
But it depends of the use for the truck/car. If I have a sport car, a obsolete musclecar I would prefer the maual tranny, if I have a '70 Lincoln Continental ( one of my dreams) or something like that i would prefer a automatic.

in my '85 F-250...hm...I have a C6 and it runs very well. If I had the change to swap....I think I would do it. The manual tranny should have an overdrive (I'm missing one gear in my C6auto)

I have made a convention from automatic to the SROD manual tranny years ago in my '79 Mustang (rebuild 5.0 with diffrent mods like crane cam, ported Heads from a 289 cid, complete ballanced, 10,25:1 comretion, Edelbrook Torker 2 with an 600 cfm douple pumper on the top....)
Believe me, that was super, marvelous to drive with the SROD.

Slushpumps are for people with one leg.

Manual, all the way.

If the Good Lord intended us to drive stick-shifts, he would have given us three legs! Seriously, I have 2 of each (transmissions, not legs)- it just depends on the type of vehicle as to what I prefer, or what's available.

My truck is an auto. Anything w/ a 4 or a 6 would have to have a manual. Although I loved my 86 Trans Am w/ 305 and 5 speed. That T5 was a crappy tranny though.

Automatic with paddle shifters in a car, 5/6 speeds in anything else
Tow/Haul with a 6.0 for dragging the trailer down the road.

I prefer a manual transmission. I like a simple truck with a manual transmission. I know people that have bought an F150 with an automatic and drive it more than their car. There are merits both ways.

MANUAL!!! my car is a 5 speed... my truck is a 5 speed... my moms is a auto... i drive her car and i search for the clutch and start trying to shift... out of my car and her car... she is in the need of an electronic shift controler and some bands tightened... my car close to 200k miles... just had a new clutch put in ONLY because the motor was out and not wanting to mess around with it in another 60k... the only thing that was wrong was my shift cables where starting to fray a little bit...

on my truck??? probablly around 200k and as far as i know... original t98... still spins the wheels just fine... weather im towing a boat... ripping a pole out of the ground... "skidding" a log... or just driving me around... i know the last thing to go will be that big old chunk of iron sitting under the center of my dash... if i do stop moving all of a sudden its either the rear end or the drive shaft... maybe the clutch...

and on top of that, ever had your breaks go bad out of the no where??? ever have it go out at 60 miles per hour??? down shifting from 4th or 5th into a lower gear will help slow you down a little bit... go from there to a lower gear and you can keep going down until your going between 20 and 30 miles per hour... and 20 miles per hour hurts a hell of a lot less then 60 miles per hour... sure thats what you have an e brake for is for those rare occasions that you loose your brakes completely... but on my truck that brake is barrely enough to hold me on flat ground... let alone slow me down that much....

im gonna keep trusting my manual trans... i dont care about my left leg being bigger then my right... i dont mind sitting in traffic holding the clutch... i dont mind down shiffing and up shifting... to me thats fun...

and all of the drag cars ive seen at the local track... have been manuals... im not sure about the actual dragster cars though((forgot the name of them...)) the ones i have had semi auto paddle shifts...

Well being as this thread was brought back, might as well give my 2 cents.

I prefer automatics in my run vehicles that I use in town mainly. I am very capable of using a manual. In fact I love them. On all my fun vehicles I have manuals, excluding the snow equipment. Its a pain in the *** shifting and trying to hold onto my pistol grip for the plow and attempt to talk on the radio. Its nice to get in a vehicle and just GO though, and not have to shift.

Well, I bought my first vehicle when I left school in 1979 & of all the manuals I've had, not one has ever given me a transmission problem

.......BUT every one of the automatics I've owned (except one C6) has given me headaches & cost $$$

My whole adult life I never owned anything but 4 and 5 speeds in small cars and F-150's. I've done the stop and go traffic for years in an F-150 4x4 5 speed. What a PITA. I've done all kinds of 4 wheelin', stump pullin' and the lot with a 4-5 speed and I'll never own another.

I don't like the fact that Ford has discontinued them in the F-series trucks as it takes away one more choice and adds big dollars tot he truck.

I just bought a 2010 Focus S and got it with the auto tranny. It's averaging 34 mpg's in mixed driving and it's fun as hell to drive. I see no point in shifting gears if I'm not going to gain anything.

Out of the 6 vehicles I own, only 1 of them is an automatic.

A manual is the only way to go, and it will always be my preferred choice (until I have knee or hip problems)

Ahhh an old thread. Like getting into the truck and finding a nice warm seat from the sun!

Seriously though. I have been driving my dad's automatic 7.3 4x4 for a while and holy cow do you have to be all over the brake in stop/slow n go freeway traffic compared to the stick! I'd say I hit the brakes 5 times as much as with my truck. That's a lot of braking.
