So I was pulling into my drive tonight and lost all power steering. My truck is almost impossible to turn (it has 35" BFgoodrich tires) now I am just wondering where to start. There are no broken hoses and the belt is still tight and it is full of power steering fluid. Now my fear is what could it be? It whines loudly so I am thinking of a possible pump but what else could I be looking at and what is most likely the problem. It does turn once I get it rolling a bit just have to muscle it. any help would be appreciated as this truck sure is getting to be a lot of problems.
My pump went out like yours. The shaft was broken in my pump. The pully fell out when I pulled the belt to change it. It just quit like you said yours did. Its a easy fix on mine since I have electric fans.
thanks for the response I was thinking it was the pump, but i'm no mechanic so you can never be sure. I'll try and put one on tonight and see how that goes. It doesn't look too bad but I'm 30 miles from my tools and will be doing it outside so I guess I'll bring out a set of deep well sockets and wrenches and hope that is enough.
well I went to marray's to get a power steering pump and they told me that there is a good chance that it is the steering gear box and that I should have a pro look at it. So I went to the ford dealer and they told me it could be something in the linkage. Should I start with a power steering pump a gear box or ??? I never have luck with taking anything in. You pay $90 to have something diagnosed you go put the new part on and it wasn't even the problem.
take you a 10 mm socket and plenty of exstentions,a ratchet,18mm wrench,1/2 inch breaker bar,and a good pair of pliers.that should take care of the tools.
