i just bought a emerson 27" flatscreen tv, and it has component video in. well i got the cable, to go from vga, to component, and when i hooked it up, all i got was a static outline of the images, and it rolled really bad. what should i try?
if you are trying to hook a computer up to it, it will not work unless the the tv is capable of displaying that type of signal ,which most tvs are not execpt for higher end sets like plazmas and lcds
well, i figure since its component capable, and the comp is component capable, itll work, ijust have to figure out how, worse comes to worse, ill just use s vid, but idd like to see the picture of component
if the computer has an S out than use that because it goes through a scan converter first and will display on a tv (poorly however) the VGA out of a computer uses a different scan rate than an NTSC tv set and it will not work. the reason they make a VGA to component video cable is because some earlier HDTV decoders used a VGA plug for the output but alot of tvs HDTV inputs are component. just because the plug fits does not mean the signals are compatible
What "alphabet" said. But you may also find that your computer has settings that can be applied to the output to the TV. I had one of the first ATI All In Wonder video cards (still have it in fact) and there were settings on top of settings for that thing to make the outputs compatible.
Check for something like that in your system tray (lower right tool bar, small icons) or also you can go to your PC's Control Panel and do some snooping for video card options. You might even find it listed under programs!
There are a lot of different scan rates and formats, just don't change the ones for your primary monitor.
Most likely you will find that the picture is much lower definition than your PC monitor, letters look blocky, etc. This is why I prefer to watch DVD's on a dedicated PC anymore
One more note on the ATI card(s), and this may well be true of all of them -
Before I could get ANY PICTURE AT ALL I had to go into the video card options menu and turn that output on. In other words enable TV out!
This may be the case with yours too.

well, the comp im tryin to do it on, is the one for the pool room, and its runnin a old ge force 2, with a video out, but its a goofy port, not s vid, but has 6 pins. any idea on that one?
I'd almost have to see it. I hope it isn't EGA vice VGA.
Get the part or model #, and run it by the G Force site to see if you can track down its capabilities.
GEFORCE is one of the legacy products (original) from Nvidia, they have a support page for info, and driver d-loads. I think you can find a manual for it too.
For sure you should be able to identify it.
pfogle, positive its not s vid, as it has 6 pins, and the aligner pin, the big black plastic one, is laying down, instead of up and down. next to it, it says v out
Ok, I think I know what it is now. That sounds like a creative video card, it's got an nvidia chipset. That connector is the "video" out connector, but it has a composite AND svideo at the same time. There was a cable that plugged in there and had both connectors on it.
