i got some dvd's but due to the region stuff they won't play on my dvd player. i was wondering is there some way i can hook my computer to my tv so i can watch the dvd's on the TV instead of my computer.
How about your computer? It may have video out feed for connecting to a TV, then you would need to get a converter. You'd probably need a converter for the audio to play on your TV as well.
If your tv only has composite RCA jacks then I think you are out of luck.
Many computer video cards have s-video output to hook up to a tv, and you can also get adapters to go from VGA or DVI to component output.
One thing to look into is ripping the DVD to your hard drive and then burning it to another DVD as a region 1 or region free disc. This of course is flirting with copywright law infringement so I hope I am not breaking any rules by bringing it up. If you want to try this PM me and I can probably help you out.
Many video cards have both an S-video output and a RCA video output (the yellow port). You can use either port for video. The only other thing you need is an audio cable to plug into your audio output port on your computer (where normally your Computer speakers would plug into). The audio cable will need to have the one male end to plug into your computer and the other end have the two connectors for RCA (the red and white). Then just enter into your graphics/video card display options and interface with the TV. I do this all the time.
Many computers don't have graphics cards, so if yours don't than you'll have to purchase one. But you have to be careful on which card to buy. Your computer will need to have a VGA port on the motherboard. If yours does not, than you will have to buy a PCI port compatible graphics card. All motherboards have PCI slots.
Which ever graphics card you purchase, just make sure it has the yellow RCA video output on it if your TV doesn't have an S-video port.
i bought the dvd's while overseas, they are old russian movies, they are region 5 and a few are all regions, i would have bought our region but could never find them.
i will look into the tv adapter thing, sounds pretty straight forward. my computer has the s-video out so i guess all i need to do is hook it to the tv adapter.
You can get a cable with s video on one end & RCA plugs on the other. http://svideo.com/
I use one all the time to watch TV showes that I record with my computer on the TV.
Added: You can change the region on you computer DVD to play those DVDs but only about 5 times. I have seen a crack for changing the region code some time ago, but I have never done it & thus can't really recommend it.
At this very moment I am watching a bugs bunny cartoon from my computer, on the tv. I use an s-video cable and a headphone jack with RCA plugs that all run into a small converter from walmart which then sends it out in co-ax to the tv. The converter also has standard RCA output on it.
Another more interesting idea is to pick up a wireless transmitter, for those who currently have wireless, just plug it into your tv/audio system and away you go. Broadband from your computer straight to your tv. No muss, no fuss. Very tempting.
i will try out a converter this weekend, interesting enough, all the dvd's play on my computer, without even changing the region code, but yet they won't play on both of my dvd players.
bf250, there is such a thing as a simple s-video to RCA converter. I have one currently that's in use, otherwise I'd just mail it to you. Drop by radio shack and see if they have any. I can't imagine this stupid little cable costing more than $10.

Find a hack for your DVD player - it's the easiest and cheapest way to go... I did all 3 DVD players in my house and they are now all region free.... All I had to do was punch some numbers into the DVD remote, get it to open an on-screen Manufacturer's setup screen and then change the region code to 0.. piece of cake -
This will allow you to cut out the computer completely and just play the DVD like God intended...lol
