Does anybody know what the length difference is between manual and power columns? Also, has anybody here had any success with cutting down a manual column to fit?
Manual is 1 3/4" to 2" longer than a power steering column. Why go thru the trouble with the lower bearing, locate a column in the wreckers. Bendix box power steering has the same column length as manual steering. I changed over from Bendix to Ford box, it's easy.

Here too.....I had the thread strip out on mine when switching the steering wheel.....I had to hunt high and low to find one that "would" fit....after some filling and filing, I have a good shaft that is still a little too long....I have to cut the threads so the horn button will fit....but afdter that last experience, I don't want to touch it.....scared I won't be a ble to find a replacement if this one strips too!
I tried that already. There is ONE power column out of three pretty well-stocked yards, it's for an auto, no steering wheel, and the bearings in it are shot. Wouldn't be so bad, but they treat it like gold- $100 was MY price for it, so it's really on the list for near $200. So, being that I have an excessive number of manual columns laying around, I'm just going to cut one of those down and make it work. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Wow $100 and I was mad because I paid $27.50 for a 70 power column at Pick N Pull. Could of had 4 complete columns in one day but have only seen 2 manual columns the last two years.

I had a bendix box in my 69, changed it to a ford box and found out that the shaft was to long. So I cut out 2" and had it welded back up and installed it, I still needed to take another 1/4" out, but I am driving it the way it is for now.
Nah, it's an auto truck, with the shifter on the floor, I'm not doing this to make it pretty, just to get it on the road. The 69 should have been taken off the road a few months back, and this truck is the closest to running out of the group. From what everybody has to say, it sounds like I can just cut down the column I have. BTW, the truck has the good Ford box, so at least I don't have to replace that too.
I already cut down an 84 column to move the truck around the yard, but I could only zip-tie it to the dash support, I'd have to modify the hanger to get it to fit properly.
Jared, If steering is all that you are concerned about, you should be able to cut one down. The 3 spd shifting is a concern but than can be delt with.
I think if I was gonna be cutting and welding on a column, I would get some of the length out of the cab. I would love for my wheel to be 3" further away from me.
