I have a 02 f350 w/ 4.10 gears in it that i pull a 12,000# toy hauler in Arizona with , and while towing the trans temp goes to 195 and will stay there until I start pulling a hill then the temp goes up to about 210 until back to flat ground. I am interested in installing the tru-cool 4379 cooler. If someone could please help me with this install. When installing the 4379 do you disconect the oem trams cooler and just install the tru-cool in its place, or do I have to put the oem cooler in line with the tru-cool . I do have a tras temp gauge so i know the temp are correct. All the help I could on this would be appreciated, including pictures of the install that anyone has done. I did do a search on trans coolers but did not get exactly what I was looking for.
I did the same install two weeks ago (along with an external transmission filter). I took the line coming from the oil-to-water (OTW) cooler on my truck and ran that into the new oil-to-air (OTA) cooler, then ran the outlet of the new cooler into the transmission. My reasoning went as follows...oil drops some heat in the first cooler (OTW) and then is really cooled down in the second OTA cooler. I haven't seen temperatures above 150 since pulling a 35' 5er or my 11.5' TC in temperatures exceeding 100!...good luck on the install - it is very easy and I know you will be happy with the temperatures you see after the install.
just2dune,
Your '02 should have an oil-to-water and an oil-to-air cooler. There is a short section of hose (bottom right side of radiator) in the cooler line from the OTA cooler to the trans oil return line. Install the hoses from the TruCool in place of this hose. This will give you the benefit of all three coolers. This is how I did it on my '01 F250. There are 2 upright plastic bars behind the grille that will line up with hole in upper ears of the TruCool. You can drill holes in the bars and bolt it up with 1/4" bolts. I used zip ties to secure the bottom ears. The holes wouldn't line up.

i hooked up my 4589 tru-cool in the same manor with the exception that i used the hook up that let me mount the cooler right on the front of the ac condensor up high on the passenger's side... it gets lots of airflow and my tranny temps are way down... i used to run 180* or so empty on a hot humid day... since i installed this additional cooler i have not had a tranny temp reading above 140*... most of the time it runs around 100*... one tip... if i had this install to do over again... i think i would just remove the entire front grille... it would have been MUCH easier to do it that way then to crawl around and try to reach in and make the hook ups... that was a real pita..!
Hey mueckster, are you refering to the radiator as the water-to-oil cooler. I am under the impression from what you are saying in your post about hooking up the trans cooler into the short section of hose in the cooler line from the OTA cooler to the trans oil return line that you just take this line and run to the new cooler and out of the new cooler back into this short section of hose. basically you just run the new cooler inline with this short section of hose. thank again
heatstroked, where did you get the hard lines to install it and also which tru-cool did you use. I have no looked har enoutg at mine is that the stock location.

Had the hard lines bent on site at time of installation.
This is not the stock location. Had to drill the plastic verticals and fabricate a cross bracket.
I believe the stock cooler sits between the radiator and the intercooler
yea , I allways tee my AUX. cooler in line with the factory RAD. cooler , if you keep your TRanny temp to 170 degree MAX , your tranny will last a LOT LONGER !!!!!!
