Hey Ya'll, I hope someone can give me some help on this. I'm working on a 1989 7.3 in a dump truck and currently have the heads off for rebuilding. The rotary injection fuel pump (with the gear and housing attached) is sitting on a workbench in my garage. The water pump and front engine cover are still on the block and i am really hoping to be able to leave them in place. I can see the "y" on the gear for the fuel pump and know that it is supposed to line up with some kind of mark on the cam gear and that's my first question. I have read through some of the posts in this forum and have seen references to "o" and "y" on the cam gear but am unclear as to the exact location of these cam gear marks and their alignment relationship to the pumps "y" mark. There is very minimal clearance between the forward face of the cam gear (which is recessed down into the engine about 2 inches) and the front engine cover which would make the use of an inspection mirror pretty difficult. I have rotated the crankshaft through the 2 full 360 degree revolutions to complete all four strokes and observed the movement of the valve lifters, pistons and the vibration damper and believe I have the engine set at TDC. That leads to my second question. When the scribe line on the vibration damper crosses through the center of lower timing light pipe thing, the no.1 piston is at it's absolute highest travel in that clyinder. If I continue to rotate the crank the extra 2 inches to line up the scribe line with the higher pipe thing, the piston has started it's downward travel. Question is which of the 2 timing light pipe looking things actually indicates TDC for that piston and why are there 2 of those pipe things anyway? Last question is, assuming the engine is TDC for no. 1 cyl, can the "y" on the Injection pump gear when positioned at true 180 degrees just be lowered onto the cam gear for correct alignment and what effect will it have if the cam gear and the IP gear are off by 1 or 2 teeth? The injector pump itself has not been moved in the gear housing.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
