injector pump timing

First I confess, I took off the timing gear housing. After a lot of searching I see that was a big no no. But its all back togther and I have a question: after new ip pump, injectors, and return lines should it start right up ( i have an electric fuel pump) or turn over a quite a bit? I belive the timing is off because when trying to find TDC I couldn't find the pointer so I put the balancer mark on the top edge of the plate thing that ( i later found out) has the pointer on it. I put the timing gear with the y strait down. I know now that that was off but it didn't even pop or backfire or any thing just turned over. Do deisels back fire like a gas jobs when the timings out?
Since reading old threads I have put the harmonic balancer on the correct spot and I found that If I loosen the bolts for the timing gear housing I can lift it enough to turn the gear seperate from the rest of the motor. Obviously I can't see the Y but this pic: (http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/I...ump%20gear.JPG ) Shows the y to be strait down from the bolt to the left of the pin. The truck still dosen't start or even try to start. I even thought I might be 180 out so I tried that, still nothing. What am I missing? I saw a thread where they mentioned the balancer actually spinning inside itself causing the timing mark to be off, How likely is that? Also if thats the case how do I find TDC?

That info is the best out there ........ but you have to time the rest of the engine so the gear can be lowered into place.

The timing mark is found on a little plate that is on the front of the engine on the passenger side. The plate is mounted so it is very close to the main pulley on the lower front of the engine which is mounted on the vibration damper. On the side of the vibration damper, is a line, which when lined up with the line marked (O) on the plate, tells you that the #1 piston is at TDC(top dead center) You can see the line on the damper, and it points to the line on the plate with the (barely visible)O mark on it.You'll have to find a way to turn your engine over by hand (Crank/harmonic balancer bolt). Make sure you remove the power wire to the injection pump(so the engine won't start)and then rotate the engine until you can line up the marks.

The engine rotates in a clockwise direction as seen from the front of the truck, and for every 1/4 turn of the engine(crank) each next piston will arrive at TDC. So, When the line on the vibration damper is at the 2 oclock position, cylinders 2 and 5 will be at TDC. When the mark is at the 5 oclock position, cylinders 7 and 6 will be at TDC, 8 oclock has cylinders 3 and 8 at TDC, and back to 11oclock, 1 and 4 will be at TDC.

Cylinder numbers are assigned 1,3,5,7 on the right (passenger USA) bank from front of truck to back, and 2,4,6,8 on the driver's side (USA), front to back. Firing order is 1,2,7,3,4,5,6,8.

OK all the above is true...... to ensure the #1 piston is at TDC compression remove the inspection cover on the oil filler/gear cover. You will see a dowel pin from the IP if it is at 4 oclock that is TDC compression stroke, if it is at 11 oclock that is TDC exhaust stroke.......

NOTE: removing the IP from the gear cover and lowering the gear by itself may be the best way. DO mark the present timing position on the IP and gear cover where they join so you can re align them.

Ok, I got her running, But, no one in the area has the equip to do the " dynamic" (? static is ball park right) timing, not even the local ford dealer. So what can I do now? Any thoughts would be great.

yeah jackass at the ford shop told me that they remove the IP to "time" it? I said no, it has to be mounted to time it correctly, he refused to hear me so i called his boss across town and explained. this guy was a newb and was instructed on how it should be done but yeah, ford wont time them anymore. We are going to have to get crafty fellas!

I called every shop around that might have a clue, but most of them I was explaining to them how to do it. I wanted to make sure they weren't going to do it by ear because I can do that, I want it right. One guy I work with compaired it to a oliver tractor and said it didn't need to be timed, "just line up the cross". How frusterating!
