I drove to the airport the other day and everything was fine. Jill picked up the truck and couldn't get it into 5th gear. I tried to back the truck into the driveway and it kept jumping out of gear. I have opened up the top of the transmission and nothing appears amiss. The Bronco is an '89 with the Mazda 5 speed. Any ideas?
That is what I was afraid of! There are approximately 120K miles on both the engine and the transmission. Neither have ever been rebuilt. Is this typical for this transmission? I don't think that I have been overly hard on the truck. I would guess that most of the miles are highway miles, but I do tow a boat some but mostly short distances.
the m5od is not the most sturdy of trannies but if taken care of can do ok. the zf is very very strong tranny . a guy on a site did the swap for under a grand total. which is awesome considering but that is doing the work himself to.
I would make sure that you have plenty of fluid in the tranny. replace whats in there and fill it back up with new stuff. you haynes manual should tell you what type of fluid to put back. start cheap first. it will save ya hopefully
It won't go into 5th at all. When I try to go into reverse it will start in and then jump back out making a wonderful sound! I was able to "feather" it back some. I just had it dropped off a local shop and we shall see what they say. I have a house full of boxes coming today (moving) and I figure it is cheaper to have someone look at it compared to a divorce!
This brings up an interesting point. I love my Bronco but it is over 15 years old. It needs a new tailgate, the paint is peeling, I would love to put a brush guard on it, etc. By the time I am done with these few items I have $3,500 into a $1,200 Bronco. Plus then I can see things starting to go wrong (like the tranny) and sucking up even more money. Do you do these things darned the cost? Or just keep it running and go on?
Oh I replaced anything on mine that went bad. That old beast was the only thing that got out and around for 3 days when we got hit with a blizzard and collected 49 inches of snow in 1 day. I have a new F150 now, the ol bromco went in for a resto and there were other probs so she got parted out for more than what I already had in her. But you would of never known the way she ran. Well worth it in my opinion. Im looking for another.
I had the same thing happen on my old F150. The bearings on the 5th/reverse gear shaft were bad. This also caused a chewed up sychro. Being adventerous, I tore into it myself. Being used to motorcycle transmissions the M5OD turned out to be pretty easy to work on (for me). I replaced the faulty bearings, the bad synchro, the plastic shifter bushings, and the shift rail plugs (that always seem to leak). Spent around $100. I think. This was 6 years, 2 clutches, and I dunno how many miles ago. Son in law has had the truck as his sole transportation for over a year and the transmission is still working and shifting just fine.
