Pididle !!!

My driver side headlight that, on low beam only, soetimes works-sometimes does not. Allways works on high beam. Replaced bulb twice. Same result both times. Any ideas? hitting it with a sledgehammer does not seem to work. Nor does the ball-peen hammer. My next tool is going to be a .270 WIN. or a 20ga slug. This frack'n thig is pissing me off.

12 Gauge may be more satisfying. Especially if you have a pump to get that feel of racking one in the chamber first. Just Kidding

Have you checked the connection at the plug. This sounds like it could be a loose connection. If so, it may be getting hot at the plug as well. Note that there are 3 connectors in the plug, and any one of them can spread out and get loose while the others remain fine. It could also be a problem in the wire, which is going to be a royal pain in the rear to trace down. You don't mention the year or the model. That could have some bearing on the situation as well. If it's not the plug, 1st step is to find a wiring diagram and see what you're dealing with.

what year and model,? some of us have the wiring diagrams and might be able to provide more clues if you tell us what year it is.

1995 4X4 EDDIE BAUER, 4.0 V-6, AUTO TRANS, 15X,XXX mi. I checked the plug with a volt meter. one wire must be the ground wire, becaus i had no voltage to 2 of the 3 wires. Removed the battery & traced the harness back to the fire wall (kinda, those wires go evreywhere! ) did not see any obvious damage, and most of the wires are in the plastic shield or wrap that they put the harness in from the factory.

When you checked the plug, did you check the female blade connectors inside to see if they formed a tight fit on the male blades on the bulb? I have seen one of these spread open and loosen up. It looks like the Red/Black wire is the low beam power supply and the black wire is the ground. It looks like the wiring junction should be near the passenger side headlight, so if only one side is giving trouble, the problem is probably nearby. Here is the wiring diagram from the autozone site

Brown Beast, It sounds like you have a split in the wire in the harness or and I don't know if your truck has it a multi-switch up on the steering column. It will do the samething. I'm rewiring a ford contour becouse I'm sick of all the shorts.

I had the same problem with my 95 Limited. My problem was caused by a cold solder joint on the Lamp Out Warning Module. The plastic piece that is around the Message Center pops right off and the LOM is located under and slightly to the right. If it's like mine, you can move the wires around and the head light will go on and off. You can also short between terminals 1 (W/LG) and 11 (DB/W) on the LOM to see if is causing the problem. I pulled mine to replace it and decided to have a look inside. I resoldered a cold solder joint I found and it has worked fine for the last two years.

Thanks!

Thanks to all that replied, And thank you Jerry for the wire diagram! Thats cool. I cut the wires BEHIND the bulb connector, and shure enough, had power. So I cut off the factory conector and used heavy duty connectors off from AGCO farm tractor parts bin. All is well. ( So far ) Now I have a " may pop" tire, and since no one knows of a lift kit for this truck, I priced a new set of 265/75/16 standard load mud terrain tires today. Shure wish I could get those 285/75/16's under there! <-ya !
