I would personally not go with a Windsor engine in a 60 pickup. Just me personally, but I have had several 351 Windsors and 302s as well and several 385 series engines, and one 335 series 400 that I still have, but in a 60 I would only go with the original 292 or a FE engine. That's just me personally. I am looking at a 59 right now that has busted piston in the 292. If I go through with the deal I am putting my newly-rebuilt 390 in there. Also yes Dennis Carpenter carries an excellent line of adapters for 48-64 trucks from Trans-Dapter. Good luck!
The only need for an "adapter" in an engine swap is if you want to mate an engine to a transmission where a suitable bellhousing is not available. Today most swaps are done using a transmission that matches the engine since automatics are usually prefered and there are plenty of choices in late model automatic and manual trannys that mate up to most popular late model engines. Most early trannys especially in pickups are not much fun to drive.
This is true. However there is also the need for a conversion kit/adapter for the motor mounts themselves. 1964 and prior to that take a different motor mount setup if I recall correctly. That's why my 352 wouldn't fit in a 62 F100 a few years back without the adapter crossmember. The 292 engines were mounted in differently. That's why you need the adapter from Transdapter that I was speaking of. It ads a whole crossmember into the front and allows your FE engine to bolt to that instead. Of course there are other ways of doing this also I'm sure such as fabricating your own mounts, etc.
well a flathead just wouldn't look right in a fridge so i wont suggest that ...... my next choice is the fe . got two of 'em myself sitting around taking up space , of the 360 variety . phiftyphive where you live ? i'm still looking / considering buying another completely rotted out 55 { the frame is even rusted out !! } for a few goodies on it . it's got a six with three gear in it that if i get it will be junked as it is most likely locked up .
I have never had much luck myself out of the 360 FE engines. I have had a little bit of everything, but for me I have always found the 360 to be a pretty lazy FE engine; stouter than the 351M but not quite as stout as a 400 (just to give a comparison from my own experiences), but I have had very good luck out of a 352 and a 390 both. I still have both and they are both relatively fresh on a rebuild.
welp ford ol' buddy they are only a simple little crank kit away from a 390 ya know . that's why i held onto 'em . had two mid 60's 390's one out of a 65 bird the other the garden variety 2 bbl outta on old rotted to the ground wagon . had the chance to sell 'em and make a little cash and did . first and foremost thing i can say about the 360 , and i've had a few in early to mid 70's 1/2 tons , is they are dependable . but every fe i've ever owned was . now unfortuneately they are just kinda taking up space i need for some things i need to do so ..................
