2002 Explorer "warning" lights

2002 Explorer "warning" lights
Hi,
My niece has a 2002 Explorer with about 70K miles on it. She said it has died on her twice, but restarted. It also took a spell of not starting, but after several attempts, it started, but the "check gauges" and "check gas cap" lights were on. I have not scanned for codes yet, just thought these symptoms might be an indication of something that somebody has seen before....Thanks!! Oh, it has the 4.0L SOHC engine.......
