1993 Ford Explorer questions

I've got a 1993 Ford Explorer Sport with 208,000 miles and I wonder if the catalytic converter is doing anything anymore. How long do those things last? I've also got an annoying rattle from what I've been told is the heat shield that needs to be tack-welded back into place. Is that expensive?

Also, sometimes when I set the parking brake, the ratchet mechanism slips and the pedal drops to the floor without setting the brake. I have to release and reset the brake. Does anyone else have this problem?

The heat shield rattle is an easy one to fix. Get a couple real big worm gear hose clamps, put them together, then wrap them around the muffler heat shield combo and tighten securely. Sorry, can't help you with the other two items. Good luck.

If your truck passed emmissions testing then I'd say the cat is still doing it's job. If it was marginal in passing it might be a marginal cat or you might have other issues throwing off your air/fuel mixture.

When I complained about the cat rattle to the dealer when my 93 was under warranty, they pulled the heat shields off of it. Later, a TSB came out. I have it at home somewhere if you want to know what it says, let me know.

Tha brake pedal ratchet was also a TSB item. There is a new replacement gear or cam that fixes this. Any dealer should have the new updated part.

Sounds like you're just getting into some of the many items that most of the rest of us have had to go through. Buckle the seat belt and enjoy the ride.

If you pull the heat shield off the cat, I suspect you will fry the radius arm bushing, which is no fun to replace.

ha, no kidding. And that's exactly what the dealer did another 2 times while it was under warranty.

The replacement cam was already installed back when.

I had a '93 with rattling heat shields. The noise gets louder when Idling. I took the bare copper ground wire out of a 12/3 electric wire and wrapped it around the offending shield. This took care of the problem.

Well, now the parking brake failed completely. The dealer (all that was open today) told me I needed a new parking brake assembly and cable. The cable is $15 at NAPA. Does anyone know where I can get the parking brake assembly for cheap? The dealer wanted to charge me $800 for parts and labor.

No way in Hades I'm paying that.

Another "noise maker" is the muffler. It has a weep hole in the bottom that can put out a heck of a whistling rattle. I stuck a coat hanger wire in the hole, leaving enough space for the water to still drip out. I recollect I glued it with JB Weld. The wire made the flow of the exhaust gas change in some inexplicable way that "turned off" the whistle.
