I am just wondering if anyone else has had experiences with their 02-04 Explorer exhibiting howling or "hooting" noises during acceleration when the outside air temp is at least 85 deg. F? There is a TSB out for it #17217 but it doesn't mention any kind of dealer fix for the issue, just says that Ford is working on the problem. It seems to cause a lack of power and the A/C goes warm every time it happens, which seems to be more and more lately and this FL heat doesn't help!!!
Anyone had this and had it fixed? I want to be armed with this info before I go back to the dealer because the first time they said they couldn't duplicate the problem and that the entire A/C system checked out fine.
Mine does that, but only when it is real hot out, 90+ or so. Have not complained yet, doesnt really seem to be of any consequence, I didnt notice any power loss..
the power loss could be because the FL dense heat starves my little V6 for air!
The biggest issue I have with this problem is the Air rarely gets cold enough to my liking when the problem is being exhibited. It doesn't go away either, at least until the car cools down to below 85 degrees.
My 03 Mountaineer does the same thing when it gets 90+. Very annoying. I think it has something to do with airflow over the windshield. It only happens 60-65mph+ and I can make it stop by cracking the driver window or when the windsheild wiper is at the top of its rotation. It does seem to eventially go away if I keep driving.
I need a new windsield and was hoping that it would fix the problem when I got it replaced. I have not noticed any drop in power or loss of AC.
My '04 Explorer has made the noise since new when it's very hot and humid outside (usually 90 degrees or higher with high humidty). I took it to the dealer once but of course they couldn't duplicate it since it wasn't hot enough that day. The noise usually occurs on light acceleration and lasts for a second or two and then when you start to pick up speed it goes away. From what I've read, the noise is caused by the compressor pulley slipping due to the moisture on the belt. It hasn't really affected the performance of the vehicle (i.e. no power loss) but at higher temps the A/C doesn't blow as cold as it does when the temps are lower.
The same thing is happening on my 04 and it is driving me crazy. Everytime I bring it into the dealer...your guessed it...they cannot duplicate the problem. The dealer said that TSB #17217 does not apply to my model, but won't tell me what that TSB states.
I'm starting to regret buying an American truck. I switched from a Subaru that had no problems. This Explorer has had more howls, rattlles and squeaks and smells from the AC. I assumed, incorrectly, since the explorer has been out for so many years they would have fixed many of these problems in the later model years.
My '03 does the same thing but only when I first get going, and only on acceleration, but after about a mile it's gone. I never had it checked, but maybe I'll add it to the ever growing list for my next trip to the dealer.
RGBPixel- I feel your pain, I too thought that it was the best selling SUV for a reason, I've been at a loss since I got it.
