thats one of those questions we may never know the true answer too, kinda like what does the M stand for in 351M. On the FE the most common explaination I have heard is Ford/Edsel, I have also heard for Ford Engine.

It is either "ford Edsel" or "Ford Engine". A lot of people think it's Ford Engine because ford already had a series of engines named for the Edsel. The MEL series engines(Mercury,Edsel,Lincoln).
