Which year tail gates swap out? I don't need the whole thing, but I need the metal peice that covers the glass in the inside part of the tailgate. I was just wondering if those where all the same, or you needed to have one from a paticular year tailgate?
rear defrost like actually on the window itself right. im not sure that any of the broncos came with such a thing. might talk with a glass shop about this. the wiring you would have to do but they could set the glass up for it probably
The newer, (so to speak), Big Broncos , (82 on up?), came with factory rear defrost, (option). But it takes more than just the glass, You also need the relay, timer, on/off switch and a seperate circuit with wiring for it. It does draw quite a bit of amps. I beleive the circuit has a 30amp fuse on it.
You also need to check the element paths on the glass closely. If there is even the slightest cut on the path, it won't work. After all, the grid on the glass is nothing more than copper tape completing a circuit, That is what heats up to warm the glass.
You can get aftermarket units that you can install yourself. They usually come with the math formula to figure out just how may lines and the size of the grid for each application. Follow it closely. It does make a difference in the performance.
Just remember that you will need to run the wiring INSIDE the tailgate, (unlike some vehicles that have the lift gate glass and wiring is visible.), and allow for movement of the glass when it goes up and down. You can run the wiring along side the wiring for the window motor through the side of the tailgate to the fender....etc. If you have nasty window sweeps, replace them. A hard, cracked or broken sweep can damage the copper paths on the glass.
According to a Bronco forum I frequent, the glass will NOT work. And looking at my 95 and my '79, I can tell you that I dont think it'd work. Try it out in a junk yard.
I've called and written one of the companies that makes the after market de-foggers and they told me that they were sorry but the item would not function properly on a window that rolls up and down like we have.
