stuck 4wd hub

Hey fellas, need a little help. My front lock out hub on my '73 F-250 4x4 will not slide off the axle (HD Dana 44) shaft, nor will it move at all. The snap ring has allready been removed and the hub is out past that point. The outer snap ring broke and let the outer cap slide out. when i removed the outer cap and and two rings inside I found the lock hub in this position and so far immoveable. I havent beat on it yet, figured someone here may have a fix. Sorry this is so long but I'm trying to give good detail. Thanks for any help.
Eveready.

Ide try tapping it back with a hammer...maybe a broken peice got under it when you tried taking it off. If you use a hammer and it dont work....get a bigger hammer! Git-R-Done. Get back to us.

You should have one small snap ring on the center splined shaft, and one large tapered and slotted retaining ring, this is between the bearing hub and actuator hub splines. Then you have two axle nuts seperated by a keyed washer. You will need a socket with four extended prongs, and a half inch drive rachet. Two bent hooks from a steel clothes hanger works perfectly to work the keyed washer out. Then you have another axle nut, it uses the same socket. Everything should slide off from there. You will have to pound the wheel studs out to seperate the hub and rotor, use a wheel nut to prevent damage to the threads.

Thanks Fellas for the replys. Bronc69 I'll try the hammer trick and see what happens.
Matt, I have both the snap ring from the axle splines and the retainer ring from the bearing hub out and intact. Icant get to my axle nuts because the 4wd lock hub is stuck on the axle shaft splines.

I've had to tap them a bit, you might have to put some of the screws in and go that route.

Matt, the part thats stuck has no screws in it. It is the part of the hub that rides on the axle splines to drive your wheel.

Install the two screws on opposite ends of the hub that attaches to the axle spline and pull on the two screws.

the screws from the cap on the hub sink into the part I believe you are saying is stuck. installing a couple screws is usually the only way to get a grip on the actuator hub.

I diddn't see any holes in it but I'll check again, I may end up drilling and tapping a couple holes and use a wheel puller. I'm still trying to figure out what caused it all to come apart in the first place. I found both snap rings stuck in the grease on the back of the dial. I put them together last fall and I know they were in place. Thanks again Matt and 75 Ford, I'll post this weekend to let y'all know what happens.

It's where the screw go through the holes that hold the exterior retaining plate to the interior axle shaft sleeve and ring assembly hub. Also, might try a pick set and try picking it out with the picks. Or, try a strong magnet. Sometimes one or the other works. Try cleaning and scraping the grooves clean on the axle shaft if it has grease caked on.

I tried to find a picture for you, but I don't have a scanner and I don't have mine apart to take a digital picture... I know there is a tech article on replacing the axle joints for a Dana 44 here.... you might take a peek through the tech articles, there might be a photo...
