back to work on a 1972 ford f100 4x4. the brakes are shot, wheel fell off and ground the brake backing plate down a bit. i wasn't there and havn't seen the truck since. my question is, did that year come in two differnet size brakes? i would guess 11 and 9? also, what size would the brake lines be? its the driver rear side. needs backing plate, brakes and brake lines.
any advice is welcome.
As far as I know, 67 was different from 68 and I don't know about the other years. 67 has smaller drums and shoes. 68+? has the larger drums and wider shoes. I don't know what "11" and "9" are. The hard brake lines are 3/16", US thread, standard flare. You can buy these at the auto parts stores.
You should have 11 x 2 1/4 or 12 x 2 1/4 drums. Been a while, but, I think mine were 12 x 2 1/4. Then again, probably not the factory 9 inch either. They never put a 9 inch drum on a F-100/F-150. I think my Ranger had bigger drums then that.
The brake line is 3/16. Make sure you get the non-metric/non-British line if shopping at Autozone or other stores.
12" drums in the front and back. The fronts are a 1/4" wider. If the wheel fell off it is probably because the drum is meant to be pressed unto the hub.
If you can double flare then you can make your own. Otherwise you can order them through parts magazines for the correct length. If you buy them at the parts store they will be close. You will need a measuring tape to figure out how long of a piece you need to buy. Then piece it together. I think on the rear I used a 20" piece and a 32"/40" piece. Then the rubber line up to the frame, and two 60" pieces up to the porportioning valve.
