I'm looking for information on rebuilidng an engine out of a ancient mail jeep, inside the engine compartment there was a tag that said it was buil by AM general, anyone know where I can find any information?
I just gave away a 1984 AM General mail truck. They are essentially a two-wheel drive CJ with right-hand steering and a cool body for carrying things. They are great trucks, fun to drive, and very useful for carrying tools and such. One thing to watch is the linkage for the shifter was prone to let the truck slip out of park if parked on a hill, so carry a chock with you. Other than that, they are bulletproorf little vehicles.
"Logan, Im pretty sure you'll find that to be a AMC 258 ci (4.0)six cylinder, same one thats used by crysler in some of their jeep products"
Unless it is one of the 4 cylinders used in them. If it is a 6 though it probably is a 258. One thing though, the 258 and the 4.0 are not the same engine the 4.0 is actually about 245CI on displacement and parts do not interchange. I have worked on both 258's and 4.0's. they seem to be pretty strong engines for AMC products.
There was a Dispatcher Jeep. It had the steering wheel on the left side. the Postal has it on the right. Other than that, except for the way the Post Office ordered them (no passenger seat, etc), I beleive they were the same vehicle. Bob
